Valenciaport recorded solid growth in import and export container activity in August 2026, reinforcing its role as a key gateway for Spain’s international trade despite a decline in transshipment traffic.
Full export containers loaded at the port increased 7.14% year on year to 78,614 TEUs in August, while full import containers rose 6.30% to 94,888 TEUs, according to the Valencia Port Authority’s latest statistical bulletin.
The growth in import and export activity contrasted with a 10.78% decline in transit maritime traffic, particularly affecting connections with other Mediterranean ports. As a result, total container throughput at Valenciaport fell 4.16% year on year to 467,089 TEUs during the month.
Despite the decline in container throughput, overall cargo handled by weight increased. Valenciaport processed 6.4 million tonnes of goods in August, up 1.33% from the same month last year. However, cumulative cargo volume from January through August reached 52.65 million tonnes, down 2.63% year on year.
Bulk and non-containerised cargo also recorded gains during the month. Liquid bulk volumes increased 6.14% to 2.65 million tonnes, while dry bulk rose 1.61% to 1.6 million tonnes. Non-containerised general cargo reached 10.75 million tonnes, representing an increase of 2.53%.
Vehicle traffic showed particularly strong growth, with 41,902 vehicles handled in August, up 36.73% year on year. The January-August total reached 367,237 vehicles, an increase of 13.14%.
Rail connectivity also continued to expand. Trains serving Valenciaport moved 2.64 million tonnes between January and August, 20.83% more than during the corresponding period of 2025.
For the first eight months of 2026, Valenciaport handled 3.75 million TEUs, down 1.70% year on year. The figures indicate stronger underlying import and export demand even as lower transshipment volumes continue to weigh on the port’s overall container performance .
