    The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has approved a ₹334.89 crore internal flyover project at Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA), aimed at improving cargo evacuation, reducing congestion and streamlining traffic movement within the port premises.

    The project involves construction of a 3.584-km elevated corridor connecting Convent Junction with the Dock Area. The flyover will separate road and rail traffic, helping cargo vehicles move more efficiently through the port and reducing delays caused by railway crossings.

    Nine railway crossings to be bypassed

    A key objective of the project is to address bottlenecks created by nine railway level crossings along the existing cargo movement route. Frequent interaction between road vehicles and rail traffic can slow the movement of trucks and affect cargo evacuation from the port.

    By providing an elevated route, the project is expected to allow cargo vehicles to bypass these crossings and maintain a more continuous flow between the port’s entry points and dock facilities.

    Faster cargo evacuation

    The flyover is expected to improve the movement of trucks carrying imported and exported cargo within the port. Faster evacuation can help reduce vehicle waiting times, improve terminal efficiency and support smoother coordination between road and rail logistics.

    The project is particularly important as Visakhapatnam remains a major gateway for bulk and other cargo on India’s eastern coast. Improved internal connectivity could help the port handle growing cargo volumes more efficiently.

    Construction to minimise disruption

    Authorities plan to execute the project while minimising disruption to ongoing port operations, particularly in critical dock areas. The elevated corridor is expected to be completed within 30 months.

    The investment forms part of wider efforts to upgrade internal infrastructure at Visakhapatnam Port and improve connectivity between cargo-handling areas.

    Boost to port logistics

    The new infrastructure is expected to strengthen cargo evacuation and reduce operational bottlenecks, potentially improving turnaround times for road-based cargo movements.

    For exporters, importers, transport operators and logistics companies, smoother internal connectivity could translate into greater predictability in cargo movement and lower congestion-related delays.

    The ₹334.89 crore project therefore represents a significant infrastructure upgrade for Vizag Port, with the potential to improve its operational efficiency and strengthen its role as a key maritime gateway on India’s eastern coast.
