    India’s ambitious Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) reached a historic milestone on Monday with the successful trial run of freight trains on the final JNPT–New Saphale (Vaitarna) section, marking the full completion of the corridor.

    The trial operations were conducted simultaneously in both directions at 11:50 hrs. A container train hauled by an electric locomotive departed from JNPT towards New Saphale, while another container train in the up direction, powered by a diesel locomotive, departed from New Saphale towards JNPT.

    The exercise, carried out under the leadership of Praveen Kumar, Managing Director of Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited, demonstrated the operational readiness of the crucial 102-km balance stretch of the WDFC.

    Senior officials present on the occasion included Shobhit Bhatnagar, Anurag Sharma, M. K. Awasthy, Sandesh Srivastava, and other key members of the DFCCIL team.

    The newly completed section features high-rise, electrified, double-line infrastructure designed to support high-capacity freight movement. Its commissioning paves the way for seamless, end-to-end connectivity along the entire WDFC, significantly strengthening India’s logistics backbone.

    With direct connectivity to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, the corridor is expected to enhance port evacuation efficiency, reduce logistics costs, and promote greener freight transportation.

    Operationally, the completion of the corridor will bring substantial efficiency gains. Freight trains will now require only two crew sets between New Makarpura and JNPT, reducing operational handovers and improving running continuity. Transit time is also expected to drop by nearly four hours, enabling faster turnaround of rolling stock, better asset utilisation, improved schedule reliability, and increased capacity to handle higher freight volumes.

    The full commissioning of the WDFC marks a transformative step in India’s infrastructure development, promising to accelerate economic growth by enabling faster, more reliable, and sustainable movement of goods across key industrial and port hubs.
