The Port of Long Beach will hold two public scoping meetings to discuss a proposed 70-megawatt battery energy storage system (BESS) by Lighthouse Pier S LLC.
The project will occupy 2.9 acres at the Long Beach Power Plant site, 2665 Pier S Lane.
The BESS aims to increase energy capacity, supporting California’s Public Utilities Commission mandate to enhance electric grid reliability during the state’s shift to renewable energy.
An in-person meeting is scheduled for 6 pm on 6 August, at the port’s Administrative Building, 415 W. Ocean Blvd.
The project includes installing about 100 fire-rated metal enclosures housing lithium-ion batteries, along with associated electrical, cooling, safety, and communications systems. It will connect to a new 66-kilovolt substation and upgrade the adjacent Southern California Edison Long Beach Bus Substation.
Last month, the port appointed Don Kwok as its new Director of Finance, who will be responsible for ensuring the effective implementation of fiscal policies.
