The upcoming museum at V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority will prominently showcase ancient maritime trade routes and India’s rich seafaring legacy, the port’s Chairman has said.
The proposed VOC Port Museum aims to highlight historic sea links that connected the Indian subcontinent with Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Europe centuries ago. Exhibits are expected to include artefacts, navigational tools, maps, models of traditional vessels and multimedia displays illustrating the evolution of maritime trade.
According to the Chairman, the museum will not only celebrate the region’s historical role in global commerce but also serve as an educational platform to promote awareness about the modern maritime sector. The initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen the port’s engagement with the community and inspire interest in shipping, logistics and port-led development.
Located in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, the port—named after freedom fighter V.O. Chidambaranar—has long been a key gateway for trade in southern India. By linking its historical roots with present-day operations, the museum seeks to create a bridge between heritage and contemporary maritime growth.
Officials indicated that the museum will also feature interactive sections for students and visitors, explaining port operations, cargo handling processes and the significance of India’s expanding blue economy.
