Pieter Elbers has stepped down as Chief Executive Officer of IndiGo with immediate effect, marking a major leadership change at India’s largest airline.

The company confirmed that Elbers has resigned from the top post after leading the airline through a period of expansion and operational strengthening. During his tenure, IndiGo continued to consolidate its position as the country’s leading carrier while expanding international routes and strengthening its fleet strategy.

Elbers, a veteran aviation executive who previously served as the CEO of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, joined IndiGo in 2022. His appointment was seen as a key step in guiding the airline’s global growth ambitions and strengthening its operational capabilities.

IndiGo said it will announce interim leadership arrangements while the board begins the process of identifying a successor. The airline emphasised that its operational and strategic plans will continue without disruption.

Industry analysts note that leadership transitions at major carriers often come at pivotal moments in the aviation sector, particularly as airlines focus on fleet expansion, international market growth and improving profitability in a competitive environment.
