Darbhanga Airport has handled its first-ever air cargo consignment of Bihar’s famous Shahi litchis, marking a significant milestone for the state’s horticulture exports and regional air cargo connectivity. The maiden shipment is expected to help local growers access faster transportation and wider domestic markets during the peak harvest season.
Officials said the consignment was dispatched under efforts to promote agricultural exports from Bihar and reduce transit time for highly perishable fruits. The initiative is expected to improve returns for farmers by enabling fresher deliveries and minimising post-harvest losses.
Bihar’s Shahi litchi, which holds a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, is widely known for its distinctive sweetness, aroma and quality. Industry stakeholders said air transportation from Darbhanga could open new opportunities for exports and premium market access for fruit producers in the region.
The development also highlights the growing role of regional airports in supporting agri-logistics and strengthening India’s cold-chain and perishable cargo infrastructure.
