Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) recorded stronger earnings in FY26, generating higher revenue than some of India’s largest cargo-handling ports despite handling lower overall cargo volumes compared with Deendayal Port (Kandla) and Paradip Port.

The performance highlights JNPA’s focus on higher-value cargo segments, efficient terminal operations and its strategic position as a major gateway for containerised trade. While Kandla and Paradip handled larger cargo volumes due to their significant bulk cargo operations, JNPA benefited from a greater share of container traffic and value-added port services.

JNPA’s location near Mumbai and its connectivity with major industrial and commercial centres have helped it maintain its position as one of India’s leading container ports. The port serves as a key gateway for exporters and importers, particularly for manufactured goods, electronics, automotive products and other high-value cargo.

The difference in earnings reflects the varying cargo profiles of India’s major ports. Ports handling large volumes of bulk commodities such as coal, crude oil and minerals typically record higher tonnage, while container-focused ports can generate stronger revenue per tonne due to the nature of services provided.

During FY26, JNPA continued to strengthen operational efficiency through infrastructure improvements, digital initiatives and enhanced terminal capacity. These measures have supported faster cargo movement and improved customer service for shipping lines and logistics operators.

The port’s performance also reflects the growing importance of containerised trade in India’s export-import ecosystem. With global supply chains increasingly relying on efficient container gateways, JNPA is expected to remain a critical hub for international commerce.

Meanwhile, larger bulk cargo ports such as Deendayal Port and Paradip Port continue to play a vital role in supporting India’s energy, raw material and industrial supply chains.

JNPA’s ability to deliver higher revenue with comparatively lower cargo volumes demonstrates the importance of cargo mix, operational efficiency and strategic positioning in determining port profitability. The results underline the port’s growing role in India’s maritime logistics landscape as the country expands its trade capacity and infrastructure network.
