South Carolina Ports and Norfolk Southern have launched a new daily rail service connecting the Port of Charleston with Huntsville, Alabama, strengthening freight links between the US Southeast and major inland markets.
The service provides shippers with a direct rail connection between Charleston and the Huntsville region, offering an additional transportation option for containerised cargo moving between the port and inland distribution and manufacturing centres.
The new service is designed to improve supply-chain connectivity and provide more reliable inland transportation for importers and exporters. Huntsville is a major industrial and logistics market, with demand for efficient freight links supported by manufacturing, automotive, aerospace and technology activity.
For South Carolina Ports, the rail connection expands the reach of its Charleston terminals into inland markets while helping cargo owners move containers more efficiently across the Southeast. Norfolk Southern’s rail network provides the inland connection from the port to Huntsville.
The daily service also supports multimodal freight movement by combining ocean transportation through Charleston with rail for the inland leg. This can help shippers reduce dependence on long-distance trucking and improve consistency for container movements.
The expansion comes as ports, railroads and logistics providers continue to strengthen inland connectivity across the US Southeast. Improved rail links are becoming increasingly important as cargo volumes grow and manufacturers seek more resilient supply-chain options.
