India is considering extending its export tax rebate scheme by another five years, a move that could provide longer-term support to exporters and improve certainty around export incentives.

The proposed extension would give exporters greater visibility when making investment and production decisions, particularly in sectors facing intense competition in global markets.

Export rebate mechanisms are designed to offset embedded taxes and duties that are not otherwise refunded, helping Indian products remain competitive in international markets. The continuation of such support could be significant as exporters deal with changing trade policies, freight costs and market conditions.

The government is also seeking to strengthen India’s export competitiveness and expand shipments across both traditional and emerging markets. A longer policy horizon could help businesses plan capacity expansion, sourcing and overseas market development.

Industry bodies have frequently called for predictable export-support measures to improve competitiveness and reduce the impact of domestic taxes on exported goods.

If approved, the five-year extension would provide greater policy continuity for exporters while supporting the government’s broader objective of increasing India’s merchandise exports.

The proposal is expected to be evaluated as part of the government’s ongoing review of export promotion measures and their fiscal and trade implications.
