CMA CGM has announced three new freight surcharges affecting container shipments originating from Mozambique, China and the Far East, with implementation dates ranging from 1 to 30 November 2026.

The new measures include a Port Congestion Surcharge (PCS) for shipments from Beira, Mozambique, an Overweight Surcharge (OWS) on selected cargo moving from China to Indian Ocean destinations, and a Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) for shipments from the Far East to Réunion.

US$100 congestion surcharge on shipments from Beira

CMA CGM will introduce a Port Congestion Surcharge of US$100 per container for shipments originating from Beira, Mozambique, to all destinations.

Effective 15 November 2026, the surcharge will apply to dry, hazardous and out-of-gauge (OOG) cargo. For countries subject to filing requirements, implementation will be deferred until 30 November 2026.

The carrier attributed the surcharge to congestion at the Port of Beira and stated that all shipments will remain subject to space availability.

The latest announcement follows an earlier congestion surcharge introduced at Beira in March 2026, with the new measure extending its coverage to shipments bound for all destinations.

US$300 overweight surcharge on selected China shipments

CMA CGM will also impose an Overweight Surcharge of US$300 on selected shipments from China to Indian Ocean destinations, effective 1 November 2026, until further notice.

The surcharge will apply to 20-foot dry containers with a gross weight exceeding 18 tonnes.

However, shipments destined for Port Louis, Mauritius, will continue to attract the existing overweight surcharge of US$500 per container.

US$300 per TEU peak season surcharge for Réunion

Separately, the carrier will introduce a Peak Season Surcharge of US$300 per TEU on shipments from the Far East to Pointe des Galets, Réunion.

The surcharge will come into effect on 15 November 2026 and apply to all cargo types.

For shipments originating in China, the application of the surcharge will be subject to the relevant Shanghai Shipping Exchange filing requirements. Alternatively, the charge may be incorporated into the ocean freight rate.

CMA CGM has also clarified that other applicable charges, including bunker-related surcharges, terminal handling charges and local fees, may be levied in addition to these new surcharges.

The announcements reflect the carrier’s latest adjustments to freight charges across selected trade lanes, citing port congestion, cargo weight restrictions and seasonal shipping demand.
