The Union Cabinet has approved the construction of the Rameshwar–Paradip Coastal Highway in Odisha at an estimated cost of ₹8,301 crore, marking a significant step toward strengthening coastal connectivity, supporting economic development, and improving access to key ports and industrial hubs in the state.
The highway project is expected to enhance transportation infrastructure along Odisha’s coastline by providing faster and more efficient road connectivity between major coastal districts, industrial clusters, tourism destinations, and logistics centers. The corridor will also improve access to the port town of Paradip, one of India’s most important maritime gateways for bulk cargo and containerized trade.
According to government officials, the project is designed to facilitate smoother movement of goods and passengers while reducing travel times and transportation costs. Improved road connectivity is expected to benefit industries such as manufacturing, mining, agriculture, fisheries, and logistics, which rely heavily on efficient transportation networks.
The coastal highway will also play a strategic role in supporting port-led development initiatives by strengthening hinterland connectivity to Paradip Port and other economic zones in the region. Enhanced infrastructure is expected to improve cargo evacuation, boost trade activities, and attract additional investments to Odisha’s coastal belt.
Apart from its economic benefits, the project is anticipated to generate substantial employment opportunities during both the construction and operational phases. Local businesses, service providers, and communities along the proposed route are expected to benefit from increased economic activity and improved market access.
The highway is also expected to support the growth of Odisha’s tourism sector by improving connectivity to beaches, cultural heritage sites, and other attractions located along the coast. Better transportation infrastructure could encourage greater tourist inflows and contribute to regional development.
Infrastructure experts view the approval as part of the government’s broader efforts to modernize the national road network, enhance multimodal connectivity, and strengthen logistics efficiency across the country. Once completed, the Rameshwar–Paradip Coastal Highway is expected to serve as a key transportation corridor that supports trade, industrial expansion, and socio-economic development across Odisha’s coastal region.
The project adds to a series of major infrastructure investments aimed at improving connectivity and promoting economic growth in eastern India, while reinforcing Odisha’s role as an important hub for maritime trade and industrial activity.
