The Central Government has declined to provide financial assistance under the Sagarmala programme for the proposed Mangaluru–Maravanthe coastal ferry project, citing that the initiative does not meet the eligibility criteria for funding under the flagship maritime infrastructure scheme. The decision represents a setback for efforts to establish a passenger ferry service aimed at improving coastal connectivity in Karnataka.
The proposed ferry route was envisioned to link Mangaluru with Maravanthe along the state’s western coastline, offering an alternative mode of transport, easing pressure on congested road networks, and promoting tourism. State authorities had sought Sagarmala support to help finance infrastructure such as ferry terminals, jetties, and associated facilities.
According to officials, the Centre has advised that the project may instead be pursued through alternative funding mechanisms, including state government resources, public-private partnerships (PPP), or other central infrastructure schemes where applicable. The Union government has maintained that Sagarmala assistance is prioritised for projects that directly enhance port-led development, cargo movement, and maritime logistics.
Despite the funding setback, Karnataka authorities are expected to continue exploring options to implement the ferry service, highlighting its potential to boost regional tourism, improve last-mile coastal connectivity, and support local economic development. The project is also seen as part of broader efforts to expand water-based transportation as a sustainable and efficient alternative to road travel.
Industry observers note that while the denial of Sagarmala funding could delay implementation, growing interest in coastal shipping and passenger ferry services may encourage stakeholders to seek alternative investment models. If executed, the Mangaluru–Maravanthe ferry service could enhance mobility along Karnataka’s coastline and complement the state’s expanding maritime and tourism infrastructure.
