Chattogram Port Authority has suspended a planned fourfold increase in container storage charges, providing relief to shipping lines, importers and exporters concerned about higher logistics costs. The decision follows industry feedback over the potential impact of the sharp tariff revision on trade operations.
The proposed increase in storage fees was aimed at encouraging faster container clearance and improving yard utilisation at Bangladesh’s busiest seaport. However, industry stakeholders raised concerns that the higher charges could increase supply chain expenses and add pressure on businesses already facing global trade challenges.
With the suspension of the revised charges, existing container storage rates will continue while authorities review the matter and assess the impact on port operations. The move is expected to support smoother cargo handling and maintain trade flow stability through the port.
Chattogram Port handles the majority of Bangladesh’s containerised trade and plays a critical role in the country’s import and export supply chain.
