Chennai Port has commenced container rail movement between the port and the Inland Container Depot (ICD) at Sanathnagar, strengthening rail connectivity between the eastern coast and inland markets in Telangana.
The new rail service is expected to provide exporters and importers with an additional transportation option for moving containerised cargo between Chennai Port and the Sanathnagar logistics hub. By improving direct rail connectivity, the initiative can support more efficient cargo evacuation and inland distribution.
Sanathnagar is an important logistics location serving Hyderabad and surrounding industrial and commercial centres. The new connection is therefore expected to improve access to Chennai Port for businesses located in Telangana and neighbouring regions.
The rail-based movement could also help streamline container handling by providing a more reliable alternative to road transportation for long-distance cargo. Greater use of rail can support better cargo planning, reduce dependence on road-based movements and potentially improve overall supply-chain efficiency.
