DHL Express has added further capacity on its Hong Kong-Penang, Malaysia connection to better serve air cargo demand between the countries.
The upgraded service is flown by a Boeing 767 freighter, replacing the previous Airbus A321, providing the integrator’s Far Eastern network with an additional 20 tons of cargo capacity per flight between Hong Kong and Malaysia.
According to DHL, the service – operated daily with partner Raya Airways – will support the rising demand for time-sensitive shipments from technology and semiconductor manufacturers in Malaysia’s northern manufacturing hub.
The 767 freighter offers range as well as payload capabilities, “accommodating more shipments and ensuring customers in Penang are better connected to their trading partners in Hong Kong and beyond”, the integrator said.
DHL recently said it does not perceive increasing air cargo capacity on intra-Asia and Asia-Europe trade lanes as a threat to its business performance. In its third quarter investor call, the business indicated that DHL hadn’t so far had to adjust rates to account for increased capacity on the trade lanes.
The German logistics company reported that airfreight volumes amounted to 444,000 tons in the third quarter, down 0.2% on the 445,000 tons recorded in the third quarter of 2024. DHL said it saw “largely unchanged volume momentum vs. Q2”.
