Express Global Logistics (EXG) has successfully completed the transportation of eight over-dimensional cargo (ODC) columns with a combined weight of 905.6 metric tonnes from Vatva, Gujarat, to Nagothane, Maharashtra, through a multimodal logistics operation involving road, barge and specialised handling equipment.
The project involved the movement of cargo units measuring up to 57 metres in length and 5.7 metres in height. The shipment was transported from the manufacturing facility in Vatva to Dahej Jetty by road before being moved in two barge voyages to Maharashtra.
At the Vatva plant, EXG deployed self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs) in a 14+14 axle split configuration to move the oversized columns from the production area to the dispatch gate. The cargo was then transported to Dahej Jetty using hydraulic axle combinations, including 10+10, 14+14 and 10+8 configurations, designed to ensure safe load distribution during transit.
Marine operations at Dahej Jetty involved loading the cargo onto 180-tonne and 250-tonne class barges through roll-on/roll-off procedures. One shipment was discharged through a controlled beaching operation at Belapur Jetty, while the second was unloaded at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port using 36-axle line SPMTs due to floating jetty conditions.
Both barge movements were executed in multiple lots and synchronized with tidal windows to ensure safe navigation and handling. Following discharge, the cargo was transported by road to its final destination at Nagothane.
According to the company, the operation required extensive planning to address challenges related to extreme cargo dimensions, tight manoeuvring conditions, tidal dependencies, night operations and coordination among multiple stakeholders. Necessary approvals were obtained from relevant authorities, while route surveys and infrastructure modifications were carried out to facilitate the movement.
The successful execution of the project underscores the growing demand for specialised heavy-lift and project logistics solutions in India’s industrial sector.
