Italy’s Port of Gioia Tauro is advancing dredging and cold-ironing works as part of efforts to improve port infrastructure, strengthen operational capacity and reduce emissions from vessels at berth.
The dredging programme is aimed at maintaining and improving navigational conditions, supporting the port’s ability to accommodate large container vessels and handle growing cargo volumes efficiently.
At the same time, the port is progressing with cold-ironing infrastructure, also known as shore-side electricity. The system will allow compatible vessels to connect to the local power grid while berthed, reducing the need to run auxiliary engines.
The development is expected to help lower emissions, noise and fuel consumption during vessel stays and support the port’s broader environmental objectives.
Gioia Tauro is a major container transshipment hub in the Mediterranean and plays an important role in connecting shipping routes between Europe, Asia, Africa and other international markets.
The combined infrastructure upgrades are expected to improve the port’s competitiveness while supporting Italy and the European Union’s efforts to develop greener and more efficient maritime transport infrastructure.
The ongoing works highlight the port’s focus on balancing capacity expansion with environmental performance as shipping lines increasingly seek ports equipped to meet stricter sustainability requirements.
