HD Hyundai has initiated a new phase of strategic cooperation with the Government of India, which is preparing to launch large-scale shipbuilding projects under its “Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.”
HD Hyundai Chairman Chung Ki-sun met with India’s Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri at the HD Hyundai Global R&D Center in Pangyo, Gyeonggi Province, to discuss collaboration in shipbuilding, fleet expansion, and technological advancement.
The high-level Indian delegation included Indian Ambassador to Korea Gurjit Singh, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas Esha Srivastava, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shri Lakshmanan, ONGC Chairman Arun Kumar Singh, Cochin Shipyard Chairman Madhu Nair, and Dahej Port Officer Sushil Kumar Singh, along with other senior officials and industry leaders.
During the meeting, the delegation was briefed on HD Hyundai’s ship design and construction technologies, smart shipyard systems, and innovation-driven operations. Discussions focused on expanding cooperation to strengthen India’s shipbuilding capacity, enhance workforce skills, and modernize maritime infrastructure.
The engagement aligns with India’s Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, a national roadmap aimed at positioning India among the world’s top five shipbuilding nations. The plan seeks to grow India’s commercial fleet from 1,500 to 2,500 vessels, backed by an investment of around USD 24 billion, and policy support of USD 8 billion announced last month for new shipbuilding initiatives.
Earlier in July 2025, HD Hyundai signed an MoU with Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL)—India’s largest state-owned shipbuilder—to collaborate on ship design, procurement, productivity enhancement, and human resource development. The two sides have also agreed to continue cooperation on India’s ₩13 trillion landing ship project.
Chairman Chung reaffirmed HD Hyundai’s commitment, saying, “Based on solid trust with India, HD Hyundai will be the best partner in supporting the development of India’s shipbuilding industry. We will continue to demonstrate global leadership for the sustainable growth of the shipbuilding and marine sectors.”
Minister Puri commended HD Hyundai’s contribution, noting, “HD Hyundai will be a very important partner in realizing India’s maritime vision. We look forward to deeper cooperation through regular exchanges between the Indian government and HD Hyundai.”
The Indian delegation will visit HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Ulsan Shipyard on November 14 to observe commercial and special vessel construction operations firsthand.
