Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has achieved another milestone in the offshore renewable energy sector with the keel-laying ceremony of a state-of-the-art hybrid electric Service Operation Vessel (SOV) for UK-based North Star Shipping (Aberdeen) Limited.

The keel was laid by Michael Reid, Head of Special Projects at North Star Shipping, marking a significant step in the construction of the second of two advanced SOVs being built by CSL for the UK operator. Each vessel is estimated to cost around ₹500 crore.

Developed in collaboration with Norway’s Vard AS, the 85-metre-long battery-electric hybrid SOV is designed to support service, maintenance, and operational activities in offshore wind farms. It is equipped with a hybrid electric propulsion system powered by lithium-ion batteries and a DC-based power network, ensuring superior energy efficiency and reduced emissions.

The vessel also features electric Azimuth propulsion for enhanced manoeuvrability and a modern walk-to-work gangway system, enabling safe and efficient transfer of personnel in offshore conditions.

Once commissioned, the vessel will play a transformative role in the offshore wind sector by offering integrated accommodation, logistics, and maintenance capabilities on a single platform.

Cochin Shipyard said the keel-laying marks another milestone in its partnership with North Star Shipping and reinforces their shared commitment to innovation, sustainability, and excellence in the offshore renewable vessel market.

“This project reflects our growing expertise in building next-generation green vessels and strengthens our presence in the global offshore renewables segment,” CSL noted in a statement.
