India’s air cargo sector is reporting solid growth, with overall cargo traffic rising around 6 % as the country’s aviation market continues to expand amid rising trade demand and improved logistics connectivity.
A key highlight has been Chennai International Airport’s strong performance in cargo volumes, particularly on the international front. Recent data shows Chennai overtaking Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport to rank among the top Indian airports for international air cargo handling in the first half of the 2026 financial year, driven by increased exports of engineering goods, electronics and other freight categories.
Industry analysts say India’s cargo growth is being supported by diversified export flows, rising e-commerce shipments and ongoing infrastructure upgrades at major airports. While growth has moderated compared with historical double-digit rates, air cargo remains a key driver of the aviation sector’s broader expansion.
The continued strengthening of air freight networks underscores India’s role as a growing hub for global logistics, connecting manufacturers and traders with markets in Asia, Europe and beyond.
