Indian Railways has approved a ₹4.4 billion infrastructure upgrade project for the South Eastern Railway, aimed at enhancing operational efficiency, increasing line capacity and improving the movement of passenger and freight trains across the network.
The investment will support key infrastructure improvements, including track modernisation, signalling upgrades and other capacity enhancement works designed to strengthen rail connectivity and improve service reliability. The project is expected to reduce congestion, increase operational safety and enable smoother train operations in the region.
The upgrade will also benefit freight transportation by facilitating faster movement of bulk commodities, industrial goods and container traffic. Improved rail infrastructure is expected to enhance supply chain efficiency and support economic activity in the South Eastern Railway zone, which serves several major industrial and mining regions.
The project forms part of Indian Railways’ broader strategy to modernise its network through targeted investments in infrastructure, technology and capacity expansion.
