Korean Air has completed the modernisation of its cargo terminal at Incheon International Airport in South Korea, launching a fully integrated smart cargo facility equipped with automated handling systems and advanced logistics technology. The upgrade is expected to increase the terminal’s overall cargo-handling capacity by more than 25%, strengthening the airline’s position in the global air freight market.

The modernisation project began in June 2025 and was completed in September 2026. It introduced automated guided vehicles (AGVs), upgraded elevating transfer vehicles (ETVs) and redesigned cargo-transfer infrastructure to improve operational speed, accuracy and efficiency.

    Automated Systems Boost Handling Capacity

A key improvement is the expansion of the terminal’s bypass infrastructure from one line to two automated transfer lines integrated with the new ETVs. This has increased the hourly processing capacity for unit load devices (ULDs)—standardised containers and pallets used to transport air cargo—from 18 to 30 units.

The enhanced system is designed to reduce cargo-handling bottlenecks, improve the movement of freight through the terminal and support faster aircraft turnaround times. Automation of heavy equipment also reduces manual handling requirements and improves workplace safety.

    Focus on Specialised Cargo

Korean Air is also expanding specialised handling facilities to accommodate high-value and time-sensitive shipments. These include products requiring controlled temperatures and careful handling, such as fresh produce, pharmaceuticals and other sensitive cargo.

The airline already operates a dedicated Cool Cargo Center at Incheon, which can store and process more than 150 tonnes of fresh cargo at a time. The upgraded infrastructure is intended to help Korean Air respond to growing demand for specialised air freight services.

    Expanding Global Cargo Capabilities

Incheon serves as Korean Air’s principal cargo hub, connecting shipments across Asia, North America, Europe and other international markets. Improving terminal efficiency is particularly important as manufacturers and logistics providers seek reliable air transport for high-value goods, including semiconductors and electronics.

Following the Incheon upgrade, Korean Air is also modernising its dedicated cargo terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, with completion targeted for 2027.

    Strengthening Air Freight Competitiveness

The smart terminal investment reflects the growing role of automation and digitalisation in air cargo logistics. Higher processing capacity, reduced manual handling and improved cargo-flow management could help the airline accommodate increased volumes while maintaining service quality.

As global supply chains place greater emphasis on speed, reliability and specialised freight handling, Korean Air’s investment at Incheon is expected to support its long-term cargo growth strategy and strengthen South Korea’s role as an international air logistics hub.
