Ocean Network Express (ONE) and ClassNK are studying the use of roll damping tanks on large container ships as part of efforts to improve vessel stability and operational performance.
The joint study is examining how roll damping tanks can reduce a ship’s rolling motion caused by waves. Better control of vessel movement could improve onboard safety, cargo protection and crew comfort, particularly during rough sea conditions.
Large container ships are increasingly exposed to challenging operating conditions as vessel dimensions and cargo capacities grow. Excessive rolling can place additional loads on ship structures, cargo securing systems and equipment.
Roll damping tanks work by using the movement of liquid inside specially designed tanks to counteract the vessel’s rolling motion. The technology could provide an additional means of improving stability without requiring major changes to a ship’s propulsion system.
ONE and ClassNK are assessing the technology’s applicability to large boxships and its potential operational benefits. The study forms part of the wider maritime industry focus on technologies that can improve vessel safety and efficiency.
The research could contribute to the development of practical solutions for managing ship motion as container vessels continue to increase in size.
If successfully adopted, roll damping technology could offer shipping lines another tool to enhance the safety and reliability of large container ship operations, particularly on routes exposed to rough weather and heavy seas.
