The Port of Koper has announced a public procurement for the development of a container dock and additional storage space in Pier 1’s northern area.

The public tender calls for the building of a 326-metre quayside, 7 hectares of stacking and handling spaces, dredging, and the requisite power infrastructure.

The quay is built as a reinforced concrete construction with deep steel piling foundations. These will be drilled up to 66 metres into the seabed to provide suitable load-bearing capability and stability.

The deadline for tender submissions is 30 September.

The port stated that despite the difficulty of the project, it will be necessary to ensure the seamless functioning of all surrounding terminals and maritime operations while development is underway.

According to the timetable, work is expected to start early next year and be completed by the end of 2027.

The project is one of the primary initiatives included in the Port of Koper’s strategic business plan for the years 2024-2028.

Nevenka Kržan, President of the Management Board of Port of Koper, said: “By expanding the capacity of the container terminal, we are responding to the expectations of shipowners and logistics operators and strengthening our position among the North-Adriatic ports.

“The construction will follow the second railway track project, which is expected to be completed in 2026, so that the Port of Koper, as well as the entire Slovenian logistics sector, will benefit from the advantages of the upgraded port and rail infrastructure in the first years of operation.”

The Luka Koper Group’s performance in the first quarter of 2024 was mostly influenced by poor economic activity in the eurozone and slow global development.
