The Port Authority of Valencia (PAV) has granted the contract to quadruple the track and build a third rail line connecting the Poniente and Levante docks.
Once operational, this infrastructure will allow goods trains to go 750 metres to the Levante Railway Terminal on double mixed 1668/1435 millimetres and electrified track, resulting in improved railway operations on this stretch of the network.
In addition, the existing single-track portion, which has operating restrictions that are incompatible with the expected traffic increases, will be removed.
The track expansion aims to increase APM’s access and allow for more trains to pass through the port, making it easier for convoys to reach the rail highway and Valencia Terminal Europa.
This initiative is funded by funding from the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, and its primary goals are:
- To fulfil the levels of capacity, operability, connectivity, and safety required by the predicted increases in traffic.
- Enable Iberian and international gauge rail operations.
- Enable rail operating with electric traction.
- Promote environmental sustainability.
The authority reported that the railway network is being adapted in portions, starting with the link to the ADIF network and progressing from there. This allows each segment to be built individually, reducing the impact on railway operations.
In January, PAV announced technical and administrative specifications for a tender to double track and build a third railway line connecting the Poniente and Levante ports in the Port of Valencia.
