The Port of Shanghai has handled 55.6 million TEUs in 2025, reinforcing its position as the world’s busiest container port and underlining China’s continued dominance in global containerised trade.
Port authorities said the strong throughput was supported by steady export demand, resilient domestic trade flows and improved operational efficiency across Shanghai’s deepwater and river terminals. The Yangshan Deep-Water Port and Waigaoqiao terminal complex continued to play a central role, handling the bulk of international container traffic and serving as key hubs for long-haul and intra-Asia services.
Industry observers note that volume growth in 2025 was driven by a recovery in manufacturing shipments, robust e-commerce exports and increased transhipment activity as carriers adjusted network rotations amid ongoing geopolitical and supply chain disruptions. Shanghai also benefited from its extensive connectivity, with services linking the port to major markets in North America, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
Automation and digitalisation initiatives have further supported higher volumes. The port has continued to expand the use of automated terminals, smart scheduling systems and green technologies, helping to improve vessel turnaround times while reducing emissions. Authorities said investments in shore power, electric handling equipment and energy-efficient operations remain a priority.
Despite facing challenges such as fluctuating global demand, port congestion at overseas destinations and periodic weather disruptions, Shanghai maintained stable operations throughout the year. Coordination between terminal operators, shipping lines and logistics providers helped ensure cargo flows remained largely uninterrupted.
With throughput of 55.6 million TEUs, the Port of Shanghai has extended its long-standing lead over other global container hubs. Looking ahead, port officials said the focus will remain on enhancing capacity, strengthening international connectivity and supporting China’s role in global trade, even as the container shipping market navigates an increasingly complex operating environment.
