The Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI) recently undertook a site visit to Alang, Gujarat, to witness sustainable ship recycling practices at Priya Blue Group’s flagship facility—V1 | V2 | 169 M, India’s largest green ship recycling yard.

The visit included comprehensive tours of the facility’s front and back yards, an on-board inspection of one of the four vessels currently under recycling, and interactions with two downstream steel mills in Gujarat, offering SSI members a full view of the recycling value chain in action.

The delegation comprised Ellie Besley-Gould, CEO of SSI; Francesca Fairbairn, SSI Member Representative from the Institute for Human Rights and Business; Robert Haggquist, SSI Trustee and Member Representative from South32; and Maria Joseph, SSI’s newest team member from the Royal College of Art. The team was hosted by Simon Bennett, SSI Trustee and Priya Blue Group’s Member Representative.

The visit underscored SSI’s commitment to being boots on the ground—engaging directly with operational practices and the people driving sustainability across the maritime value chain.

As a long-standing member of the Sustainable Shipping Initiative, Priya Blue Group continues to play a pivotal role in advancing responsible ship recycling. Its efforts strongly support collaborative industry action to enhance sustainability, safety, and transparency in global shipping.
