Addressing the Rajya Sabha during the Union Budget Session 2026, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Hon’ble Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, highlighted the government’s focus on developing National Waterway-16 (NW-16) on the Barak River to strengthen inland water transport in the Northeast.

The Minister informed the House that the project includes extensive dredging works and the upgradation of terminals at Badarpur and Karimganj. The 121-km stretch between Lakhipur and Bhanga is being developed to facilitate seamless movement of cargo, passenger and cruise vessels, improving year-round navigability on the river.

Shri Sonowal said the development of NW-16 will significantly reduce logistics costs and enhance trade and commerce in the region. The project is expected to benefit nearly 50 lakh people across Assam’s Barak Valley and neighbouring states, providing new opportunities for farmers, entrepreneurs and local businesses while supporting regional economic growth.
