Indian Railways has approved a series of major capacity expansion projects aimed at easing congestion across key sections of its network and improving the movement of passenger and freight trains.
The projects include new lines, doubling and multi-tracking works on heavily utilised routes, along with yard remodelling and signalling upgrades to enhance line capacity and operational efficiency. Officials said the initiatives are focused on high-density corridors that frequently face bottlenecks due to rising traffic volumes.
According to the Railways, the capacity additions are expected to reduce delays, improve average train speeds, and enable smoother handling of freight, particularly bulk commodities and containerised cargo. The move is also aligned with the national transporter’s broader push to strengthen rail-based logistics and support economic growth.
The expansion projects will be implemented in phases, with execution timelines varying by corridor. Indian Railways said modern construction practices and advanced signalling systems will be deployed to minimise disruption during implementation.
Industry observers say the approvals underscore the government’s focus on infrastructure-led growth and the need to future-proof the rail network as demand for passenger mobility and freight transport continues to rise.
