The Union Cabinet has approved two major broad-gauge railway line projects in Gujarat’s Kutch district — the Desalpar–Hajipir–Luna line (81.771 km) and the Vayor–Lakhpat line (62.686 km). Together with the extension of the Bhuj–Naliya line to Vayor and a new Naliya–Jakhau Port railway link, the region is set to get nearly 194 km of new rail routes at a combined estimated investment of ₹3,375 crore.
Officials noted that Kutch, home to India’s largest limestone belt producing nearly 70% of the country’s limestone, is also known for its premium bentonite clay reserves. The enhanced rail connectivity is expected to significantly improve the transportation of these key minerals, supporting industrial expansion and economic development.
The 24.65 km extension of the Bhuj–Naliya line to Vayor is expected to be a major boost for local industries. Leading cement manufacturers, in particular, will benefit from direct rail access, improving logistics efficiency and easing the load on road networks.
In addition, the newly approved 24.88 km Naliya–Jakhau Port railway line will connect Jakhau Port to the national rail grid for the first time. The ₹410.46 crore project is poised to increase the port’s cargo handling potential and reduce pressure on major ports such as Mundra and Kandla. Its strategic location near the India–Pakistan international border and the Indian Air Force station in Naliya adds further significance.
These projects mark a major step forward in modernising Kutch’s logistics infrastructure and strengthening the region’s role in India’s industrial supply chain.
