V.O. Chidambaranar (VOC) Port is set to install an anti-drone system within the next three months as part of efforts to strengthen security at the strategic maritime facility, officials said.
The proposed system will help detect, track and neutralise unauthorised drone activity in and around the port area, enhancing protection for critical infrastructure, cargo operations and vessels. The move comes amid growing concerns globally over the misuse of drones near ports and other sensitive installations.
Port authorities said the installation is part of a broader security upgrade programme in coordination with central agencies, aimed at aligning VOC Port with international port safety and security standards. Once operational, the system is expected to provide real-time surveillance and rapid response capabilities.
Officials added that training will be provided to security personnel to ensure effective operation and integration of the anti-drone technology with existing monitoring systems. The upgrade is also expected to reassure shipping lines, logistics operators and other stakeholders using the port.
VOC Port, one of India’s key gateways on the east coast, handles a wide range of cargo including containers, coal, fertilisers and project cargo, making enhanced security a priority.
