Two Cosco Shippping Lines ships, COSCO ASIA and NEW LOS ANGELES, have refuelled with B24 marine biofuel oil.

COSCO ASIA refuelled with 2,400 tonnes at the Xiamen Ocean Gate Container Terminal, creating a new single-refueling record for biofuel oil at Fujian Port, and NEW LOS ANGELES refuelled with 5,400 tonnes at the Hong Kong terminal, marking a milestone for biofuel oil refuelling in Hong Kong.

B24 marine biofuel oil consists of 24 per cent sustainable biodiesel and 76 per cent conventional low-sulfur fuel oil. This biofuel’s feedstock is readily available and renewable, resulting in a large reduction in carbon emissions from ships.

The usage of B24 marine biofuel oil is expected to reduce carbon emissions by around 20 per cent, playing an important role in accelerating the shipping industry’s transition to greener, lower-carbon operations.

COSCO SHIPPING has reportedly led the development of dual-fuel powered vessels using new energy sources, in line with the global shift towards green and low-carbon practices.

The firm has campaigned for the use of biofuel oil in refuelling and sea trials, and is actively researching the widespread use of biofuels in marine transportation to help accelerate the transition to more sustainable shipping operations.

Last month, COSCO SHIPPING named China’s first 16,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel containership, M.V. “COSCO SHIPPING YANGPU” at Yangzhou.
