Vienna Airport handled a total volume of 233,233 tonnes from January to September 2025, an 8% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. According to the official press release, the growth was driven by the rising belly-hold capacity on long-haul flights and the ecommerce segment.

Julian Jäger, joint CEO and COO of Vienna Airport said, “We recorded further gains in the third quarter. Vienna Airport offers a comprehensive service portfolio and decades of expertise in the cargo sector. The sustained strong development confirms our role as a high performance cargo hub in Europe.”

The growth was broad-based across various cargo segments. Belly-hold cargo, freight carried in the holds of passenger aircraft, rose by 2% to reach 92,604 tonnes by the end of September. The third quarter, July, saw a 12% increase and August achieved 10% growth.

Import volumes grew by 5% to 125,284 tonnes, while exports saw a sharper increase of 11%, reaching 107,949 tonnes. Furthermore, the specialised Vienna pharma handling center, a facility for sensitive pharmaceutical transports, recorded an increase, with tonnage handled rising by 7.4% to 3,307 tonnes.

Michael Zach, Senior Vice President Ground Handling & Cargo Operations of Vienna Airport said, “Vienna is a logistics competence center for a wide range of cargo segments—from traditional air freight and e-commerce to sensitive pharmaceutical transports. The current volume increases show that we are well positioned in the market.”
