A powerful explosion erupted aboard the container vessel YM Mobility at Ningbo-Zhoushan Port in China’s Zhejiang Province on Friday, 9 August 2024, triggering a large fireball and engulfing several containers at the Beilun Port area.
According to CCTV footage from the terminal, the incident began with a sudden release of white smoke, followed moments later by an intense orange-yellow explosion that sent debris across the quay. The vessel was docked at the Beilun Phase III Terminal at the time of the blast.
The YM Mobility, a post-Panamax container ship built in 2021 and operated by Yang Ming Marine Transportation, reportedly suffered damage limited to the forward section of the vessel. Preliminary assessments indicate that the explosion originated from a container located near the bow, although authorities have yet to confirm the nature or contents of the container involved.
Port officials confirmed that no injuries were reported, and the fire and smoke were quickly contained to the affected area. The remainder of the ship and surrounding terminal infrastructure appeared largely undamaged, allowing emergency teams to secure the site efficiently.
Investigations into the cause of the explosion are ongoing. The incident has once again underscored longstanding concerns within the maritime industry regarding accurate cargo declarations, safe handling of dangerous goods, and the need for robust emergency response systems at major container ports operating under high cargo density.
Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, one of the world’s busiest container hubs, continues to operate while authorities assess safety protocols and await further findings from the investigation.
