HD Hyundai is set to sell its shipbuilding facility in Gunsan to HJ Shipbuilding & Construction, marking a significant move in the restructuring of South Korea’s shipbuilding sector.

The yard, located in Gunsan, South Korea, has remained largely idle since operations were suspended several years ago due to weak global shipbuilding demand. The planned transfer is expected to revive activity at the facility and support regional industrial development.

Under the proposed arrangement, HJ Shipbuilding & Construction would take over the yard’s assets and infrastructure to expand its shipbuilding capacity and diversify production . Industry observers say the move could help the company strengthen its position in specialized vessels and mid-sized ship construction.

For HD Hyundai, the divestment aligns with its broader strategy to streamline operations and focus resources on its core shipbuilding operations through units such as HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and HD Hyundai Samho.

If completed, the deal could lead to the gradual restart of shipbuilding activity at the Gunsan facility, potentially creating new employment opportunities and supporting South Korea’s maritime manufacturing ecosystem. Industry sources indicate that discussions between the two companies are progressing, though final terms and regulatory approvals are still pending.
