Importers, exporters, and logistics operators across the Nhava Sheva maritime belt face mounting operational disruptions and extended freight transit times following a trade advisory issued by the Container Freight Station Association of India (CFSAI).

The warning underscores growing gridlock within the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and Container Freight Station (CFS) ecosystem, where multiple bottlenecks are heavily constraining cargo movement.

    Bottlenecks Paralyzing Supply Chains

According to the CFSAI advisory, container evacuation and transfer routines are experiencing severe slowdowns driven by several compounding factors:

    • Severe Traffic Congestion: Frequent traffic stoppages and vehicle bottlenecks are choking vital freight corridors, with major congestion reported near Chandani Chowk.

    • Terminal Gate Gridlock: Key port terminals—notably NSICT (Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal), NSIGT (Nhava Sheva Gateway Terminal), and GTI (Gateway Terminals India)—are grappling with gate-in and gate-out congestion.

    • Slower Cargo Flow: Delays in clearing import containers from port yards are cascading into backlogs for export-bound boxes attempting to gate-in before vessel cut-offs.

    • Infrastructure Deterioration: Poor road quality, unpatched potholes, and localized waterlogging have further curtailed vehicle movement, worsened by ongoing road repairs and maintenance projects.

    • Fleet Turnaround Strains: Transport operators report a steep rise in trailer truck turnaround times, sharply reducing the number of trips fleet drivers can execute in a day.

    Impact on Trade Operations

The resulting disruptions have stretched transit windows and created scheduling volatility across the broader logistics chain.

Industry experts advise importers and exporters to build extra time buffers into their supply chain planning and maintain close, real-time coordination with logistics providers, customs brokers, and haulage fleets to mitigate missed vessel connections or demurrage charges.

Trade stakeholders remain hopeful that local traffic management interventions and accelerated road repairs will ease congestion and restore steady container movement across the JNPA hub soon.
