Indian Railways has opened five new Goods Cargo Terminals (GCTs) across Gujarat, expanding the state’s rail freight network and providing additional infrastructure for cargo handling.
The new terminals are expected to improve the movement of bulk and general cargo by providing more locations for loading and unloading goods. The facilities can also support businesses seeking rail-based transportation for moving commodities over longer distances.
The expansion is part of Indian Railways’ broader efforts to increase freight traffic, strengthen multimodal logistics and improve access to rail freight infrastructure.
GCTs allow private operators and logistics companies to participate in cargo-handling activities and develop terminal infrastructure connected to the railway network. Such facilities can help integrate rail transportation with road-based first- and last-mile services.
Gujarat is a major industrial and trading hub, with significant cargo flows from sectors including manufacturing, chemicals, agriculture, engineering and other industries. Additional freight terminals can provide businesses with more options for moving goods efficiently.
The new facilities are also expected to support better connectivity between production centres, distribution hubs and ports, strengthening Gujarat’s role in national and international supply chains.
