CMA CGM has launched its first dedicated full block train service in Kenya, connecting the Port of Mombasa with the Nairobi-Embakasi Inland Container Depot (ICD), in a move aimed at strengthening inland connectivity and expanding its logistics presence in East Africa.

The new service will initially operate one dedicated train per week, carrying containerised import cargo from Mombasa to Nairobi. Equipped with 54 wagons, each train has a capacity of 108 containers (TEUs), providing an integrated rail-based transport solution between Kenya’s main maritime gateway and its inland economic centre.

The initial phase will enable CMA CGM to assess customer demand and explore opportunities to increase service frequency and introduce a return rail service from Nairobi to Mombasa.

Developed in partnership with the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC), the initiative strengthens the integration of maritime and rail freight operations, offering customers improved connectivity and additional options for moving cargo between international markets and inland destinations.

The dedicated rail service is also expected to support more efficient cargo movement, strengthen supply chain connectivity and reinforce CMA CGM’s long-term commitment to Kenya and the wider East African logistics market.
