The Peruvian President Dina Boluarte has awarded the operational licence to Cosco shipping ports Chancay Peru S.A., marking the port’s official commencement of commercial operations.
The Port of Chancay was inaugurated following the opening orders from the Presidents of China and Peru in November 2024. In her remarks on the licence-awarding ceremony, President Boluarte stated that the Port of Chancay is projected to contribute approximately 1.8 per cent to Peru’s GDP growth, representing an estimated annual economic benefit of $4.5 billion, and generate a significant number of new direct and indirect jobs.
President Boluarte highlighted that the opening of Chancay port has reduced transit time from Peru to Asia from 35 days to 23 days, substantially lowering logistics costs and boosting the international competitiveness of Peruvian exports.
She encouraged neighbouring countries in South America to utilise this emerging strategic hub of Chancay to strengthen trade ties with the Asian market, thereby promoting regional economic integration and shared prosperity.
Just days prior to the ceremony, a 62,000-dwt multi-purpose vessel from COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers made its inaugural call at the Port of Chancay, offloading 50 pure electric mining trucks from Tonly Heavy Industries. This marked the beginning of specialised cargo operations at the megaport facility.
Currently, the Port of Chancay operates as a multi-functional terminal capable of handling containers, bulk cargo, RoRo traffic and so forth. The port is actively conducting various freight services and has attracted numerous traders from both the Asia-Pacific and Latin American regions.
Several major international shipping lines have established trunk lines and feeder services connecting the Port of Chancay with hubs in Panama, Colombia, Chile, and southern Peru. This network surrounding Chancay port is enhancing Peru’s connectivity within the region and the globe.
Last month, COSCO SHIPPING held a naming ceremony for the OCEAN INSPIRATION in Shanghai, marking a milestone in its growing fleet.
