Chennai Port Authority is stepping up efforts to strengthen rail-based EXIM connectivity with key hinterland markets, with the commencement of the Hyderabad–Chennai Port container rail movement marking an important milestone in its connectivity strategy.
The Port Authority is seeking to increase rail utilisation as part of its broader efforts to improve cargo aggregation, enhance connectivity for shipping lines, reduce dependence on road transportation and provide a more efficient and environmentally sustainable logistics option.
To accelerate rail-linked cargo growth, Chennai Port Authority has constituted a dedicated Rail Connectivity Cell. The cell will work closely with trade bodies, logistics partners, CONCOR, shipping lines and other stakeholders to develop new rail-linked opportunities connecting the port with major hinterland markets, including Hyderabad, Pollachi and Mysore.
The Port is also examining suitable commercial support mechanisms to encourage greater movement of EXIM cargo by rail and make rail-linked logistics more attractive to exporters, importers and other stakeholders.
As Chennai Port expands its container business, the initiative is aimed at ensuring that the benefits of increased cargo volumes extend across the maritime and logistics ecosystem, including the Port, terminals, shipping lines, Container Train Operators (CTOs), logistics providers, exporters and importers.
The enhanced rail connectivity is expected to strengthen Chennai Port’s position as a gateway for hinterland cargo while providing businesses with additional options for moving EXIM shipments efficiently to and from the port.
