Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has secured orders to build around 40 ships for international customers, with clients from the United States, Germany, Norway and other countries, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said.

The orders underline the growing global demand for vessels built by Indian shipyards and highlight CSL’s expanding presence in international shipbuilding markets.

The company, India’s largest commercial shipbuilder, has been pursuing overseas contracts across several vessel segments. The latest orders are expected to strengthen its order book and support higher utilisation of its shipbuilding facilities.

The development comes as India seeks to expand its shipbuilding capacity and increase the country’s share of the global maritime manufacturing market. The government has identified shipbuilding as a strategic sector and is promoting investment, technology development and greater participation in international markets.

Cochin Shipyard has also been expanding its infrastructure and capabilities to handle larger and more technologically advanced vessels. Its international order pipeline is expected to provide opportunities for Indian suppliers and ancillary industries while generating skilled employment.

The new orders from global customers reinforce India’s emergence as a competitive shipbuilding destination and support the government’s broader objective of making the country a major global maritime hub.
