Hanwha Ocean has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Thordon Bearings to strengthen cooperation on advanced marine bearing technologies and sustainable shipbuilding solutions.

The agreement aims to expand collaboration between the South Korean shipbuilder and the Canadian marine bearing manufacturer in the development and application of environmentally friendly bearing systems for commercial and offshore vessels. The partnership is expected to focus on improving vessel efficiency, operational reliability, and compliance with evolving global environmental regulations.

Under the MoU, the two companies will explore opportunities to integrate Thordon’s water-lubricated bearing technologies into Hanwha Ocean’s next-generation shipbuilding programmes, including LNG carriers, container vessels, offshore units, and other specialised ships.

Officials from both companies said the collaboration reflects growing industry demand for sustainable marine technologies capable of reducing maintenance requirements, improving equipment lifespan, and supporting lower environmental impact across vessel operations.

The partnership also aligns with broader efforts within the maritime industry to adopt greener ship technologies amid tightening international emissions standards and increasing focus on eco-friendly vessel design.

Industry observers noted that strategic partnerships between shipbuilders and marine equipment suppliers are becoming increasingly important as shipping companies seek advanced technologies to improve operational performance and meet decarbonisation targets.

The MoU further strengthens Hanwha Ocean’s push into next-generation maritime solutions while expanding Thordon Bearings’ presence in the global shipbuilding and offshore sectors.
