India has initiated an anti-dumping investigation into steel imports from China, Japan, and Russia amid rising concerns that low-cost shipments are putting pressure on domestic steel manufacturers.

The probe aims to examine whether steel products imported from these countries are being sold at unfairly low prices, potentially harming local producers and distorting market competition.

Authorities will assess pricing patterns, import volumes, and their impact on India’s steel industry, which has reported increasing cost pressures due to competitive global supply conditions.

Domestic steelmakers have raised concerns over the surge in inexpensive imports, arguing that sustained undercutting could affect production margins, capacity utilisation, and long-term investment plans in the sector.

The investigation is part of India’s broader trade remedy framework, which allows action against dumping practices to ensure fair competition and protect key domestic industries.

Officials said the findings of the probe will determine whether corrective measures, such as anti-dumping duties, may be imposed to safeguard local manufacturers.

The steel sector remains a critical component of India’s industrial growth, supporting infrastructure, construction, automotive, and manufacturing activity.
