Cross-border import and export operations through the Hili land port between India and Bangladesh have been suspended indefinitely after Indian exporters and customs clearing agents began a strike on August 30.
The Hili Exporters and C&F Agents Association is demanding facilities and trading opportunities comparable to those available at other West Bengal land ports, including Sonamasjid. Traders say Hili has a more restricted list of permitted goods, putting them at a competitive disadvantage and contributing to declining export volumes.
The suspension has already affected cargo movement, with trucks carrying wheat, maize, bran, pulses and stone stranded on the Indian side. Bangladeshi importers have warned that prolonged disruption could result in significant financial losses, particularly for consignments already in transit.
Passenger movement through the Hili immigration checkpoint remains unaffected, with valid passport holders continuing to cross the border. Meanwhile, traders and clearing agents on both sides are seeking talks to resolve the dispute and restore goods movement.
