Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), India’s largest container port, has announced that its Special Economic Zone (SEZ) has fully transitioned to 100% green energy operations.

Effective September 1, 2025, the SEZ has entered into a short-term open access agreement to procure 6 MW of grid-connected wind power at a significantly reduced rate of ₹3.11 per kWh, compared with the earlier reliance on conventional sources at ₹6.30 per kWh.

Unmesh Sharad Wagh, IRS, Chairperson, JNPA and CMD, VPPL, said, “At JNPA, we firmly believe that sustainability and growth must go hand in hand. The transition of our SEZ to 100% green energy reflects our vision of creating a responsible, future-ready industrial ecosystem. This initiative not only reduces our environmental impact but also offers competitive advantages to industries operating within the SEZ.”

Since its inception in August 2021, JNPA SEZ has been sourcing power from conventional sources. The shift marks both an environmental and economic milestone, cutting costs while driving down carbon emissions.

As a deemed licensee, JNPA SEZ procures electricity for its consumers through open access in line with Ministry of Power guidelines. The move underscores JNPA’s commitment to port-led sustainable industrial development, setting a benchmark for other economic zones across the country.
