Kandla Port is stepping up efforts to attract global hydrogen companies for the development of green-fuel and clean shipping projects, as India accelerates its transition towards low-carbon maritime operations.
The port is seeking partnerships with international players involved in green hydrogen, green ammonia and other alternative marine fuels. The initiative is aimed at building a stronger ecosystem for production, storage, handling and bunkering of clean fuels at the port.
Kandla, located on India’s western coast, has significant potential to emerge as a hub for green-fuel supply because of its established port infrastructure and connectivity with industrial and energy markets. Developing alternative-fuel facilities could also support shipping lines seeking to reduce emissions from their operations.
The port’s outreach to international hydrogen companies is expected to encourage investment in fuel production and related infrastructure. Potential projects could include green hydrogen and ammonia production facilities, storage terminals, bunkering infrastructure and associated logistics facilities.
The move aligns with India’s broader National Green Hydrogen Mission, which seeks to expand domestic green hydrogen production and establish the country as a major hub for clean hydrogen and its derivatives.
For the shipping sector, availability of green ammonia and other low-carbon fuels at major ports will be important as carriers transition towards cleaner vessels. Kandla’s efforts could therefore strengthen India’s position in the emerging global green-fuel supply chain.
