A Mozambique-flagged LPG tanker, DISHA, carrying 28 Indian crew members came under attack in Iranian territorial waters on Friday, amid escalating tensions between Iran and the United States.
The Indian Embassy in Tehran confirmed the incident, stating that it is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with the Iranian authorities. According to the Embassy, all 28 Indian nationals on board the vessel are safe.
“The Embassy of India in Tehran is aware that the Mozambique-flagged LPG tanker DISHA came under attack in Iranian territorial waters earlier today. The vessel has 28 Indian crew members on board. The Embassy has been in close contact with the relevant authorities and has confirmed that all Indian crew members are safe,” the mission said in an official statement.
The Embassy added that it will continue to remain in contact with the concerned authorities and closely monitor developments.
The incident comes against the backdrop of heightened geopolitical tensions in the region following the recent escalation in the Iran-US conflict, once again highlighting the growing security risks facing commercial shipping operating in and around Iranian waters.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the extent of damage sustained by the tanker, nor have they identified the party responsible for the attack. The incident is likely to raise fresh concerns within the global maritime industry over the safety of merchant vessels transiting the region.
