The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has launched a $45 million programme to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission trucks, terminal tractors and charging infrastructure at the port. The initiative is being implemented in partnership with CALSTART.
Under the Clean Truck Incentive programme, up to $39 million will be provided through point-of-sale vouchers to support the purchase of zero-emission drayage trucks, yard tractors and related charging equipment. A further $5 million Green Drayage Accelerator programme will support up to five electric truck charging hubs within 10 miles of the port’s marine terminals.
CALSTART will design and administer both programmes, with the rollout scheduled to begin this autumn. The initiatives are aimed at lowering the cost barriers for trucking operators and accelerating the deployment of electric commercial vehicles serving the port.
The programmes are funded through a $451 million grant awarded to the Port Authority under the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Ports Program. The wider grant will also support electric cargo-handling equipment at marine terminals and shore-power infrastructure for container ships.
The new investment forms part of the Port Authority’s broader goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 while reducing emissions from freight movement across the New York-New Jersey port complex.
