Port Houston began the year with 356,407 TEUs in January, representing a 7 per cent increase over the same month last year.

This is the busiest January on record for containerised goods at Port Houston.

East Asian imports surged in anticipation of lunar new year sales. According to year-to-date (YTD) November 2024 statistics, Asia accounts for 56 per cent of all container imports at Port Houston facilities.

In January, loaded imports increased by 10 per cent over the same month previous year, while loaded exports decreased by 1 per cent.

Charlie Jenkins, CEO of Port Houston, said: “We are starting the year strong, reaching milestones with completion and acceptance by USACE of Segment 1B for Project 11 and operations records at our terminals. Our work as the advocate for the Houston Ship Channel helps us build prosperity for the region.

“We are strategically focused on enhancing capacity and resilience. As we continue to grow, we
do so with this goal in mind, to be the nation’s premier maritime gateway for all.”

In January, Port Houston revealed that its container traffic increased 8 per cent in 2024 compared to 2023, hitting a record 4.13 million TEUs.
